Lung Cancer Factsheet
Lung cancer is the growth of abnormal cells which cluster together inside the lungs, forming a
tumour. Lung cancers usually start in the cells lining the airways, but there are different types
of lung cancer depending on which cells are affected.
What causes lung cancer?
Up to 90 per cent of lung cancers are caused by cigarette smoking, which damages the genes
in lung cells; others are the result of cancer-causing agents like asbestos and radiation. This
damage allows the cancerous cells to grow and divide uncontrollably, eventually spreading
throughout the body, unless they are removed or treated.
Symptoms of lung cancer
Common symptoms of lung cancer may include:
- Breathlessness
- Persistent cough or a new or changed wheeze
- Blood-streaked phlegm
- Pain in the chest when taking a deep breath or coughing
- Recurring chest infections, pneumonia, or bronchitis
- Excessive tiredness
- Unexplained weight loss
How is it treated?
The treatment for lung cancer may include surgery, where the tumour is removed, and
chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
