What is palliative care?

Palliative care is available for people of all ages who have a life-limiting illness. The
aim of palliative care is to achieve the best possible quality of life for the individual
person, their carers and their family.

The need for palliative care does not depend on a specific medical diagnosis, but on
the person’s needs.

Depending on the individual preference and circumstances, care can be provided at
home, a hospital, or a hospice.

What palliative care involves

The goal of palliative care is to help the patient live well until death. Palliative care
uses a holistic approach.

It manages pain and other symptoms, whilst also addressing the physical, emotional,
cultural, social and spiritual needs of the person, their family and their carers.

Families and carers also receive support from palliative care services. As they
provide much of the care for people who are dying, practical and emotional support
for the family is critical.

Common concerns

Everyone has different needs, but some emotions are common to dying patients,
such as fear of abandonment and fear of being a burden.

They may also have concerns about loss of dignity and loss of control. These should
be discussed with the patient and the palliative care team.
