Prostate Cancer Factsheet

Prostate cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer amongst Australian men,
after skin cancer. Prostate cancer usually grows slowly, so provided appropriate treatment
occurs while the cancer is still confined to the prostate gland, it can be cured.

The cancer occurs when cells of the prostate gland reproduce far more rapidly than in a
normal prostate, causing a swelling or tumour. If left untreated, these cells eventually break
out of the prostate and invade other parts of the body, like the bones and lymph nodes,
producing secondary tumours.

Prostate cancer is most common in men over the age of 50, but younger men with a family
history of the cancer are at a greater risk.

Symptoms

Not everyone experiences symptoms of prostate cancer, and the signs of it are often first
detected by a doctor during a general check-up. However, some men will experience
changes in urinary or sexual function that might indicate prostate cancer. These can include:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, upper thighs
  • Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine
  • Difficulty in having an erection

All men should be aware of the risk of the disease and consider being tested for it from age
50 onwards, or 40 onwards if there is a family history of prostate cancer.

How can Just Better Care help?

Just Better Care can provide a range of supports when and if required from when a person is
diagnosed right through the range and spectrum of the disease process. Support can be in
the form of assistance around the home; with tasks such as domestic assistance, help
preparing meals and help with ones laundry needs. Other supports may be desired such as
taking a person to an appointment, outings to see friends and family through to shopping.

Should a person require more assistance this can change as and when required; some
people may need other assistance including help with activities of daily living including
showering, dressing and grooming and general monitoring.
