Stroke Factsheet
A stroke occurs when the blood flow to the brain is suddenly disrupted, usually the
result of a blood clot or blood vessel breaking in the brain. When the blood flow is
stopped the brain cannot get the oxygen it requires, causing brain cells in the area to
die. As a result, the person loses the ability to do the things that are controlled by that
specific part of the brain.
Impact of a stroke
Common problems can include some weakness or paralysis in a specific area such
as the leg and/or arm (paralysis), some people can suffer from difficulty swallowing,
incontinence, shoulder pain or arm pain/stiffness, depression, and difficulty speaking,
understanding, reading or writing.
Injury to one side of the brain usually affects the opposite side of the body, and some
effects are specific to whether the stroke affected the left or right side of the brain.
Right hemisphere strokes
In a right-hemisphere stroke, a person may experience problems with their spatial
and perceptual abilities. This can cause them to misjudge distances, or be unable to
perform tasks like picking up an object or tying their shoes.
These judgment difficulties also show up in behaviour. For example, a person may
act impulsively, or be unaware of their impairments and certain of their ability to
perform tasks the same as before the stroke.
Left hemisphere strokes
A person who suffers a left-hemisphere stroke may develop a wide range of speech
and language problems. In contrast to survivors of right-hemisphere stroke, people
who have had a left-hemisphere stroke often develop slow and cautious behaviour. They may need frequent instruction and feedback to finish tasks.
Available treatment
Rehabilitation helps a person regain the skills that were lost or affected by the stroke,
and learn new skills and techniques to cope with any long-term physical,
psychological and social changes.
How can Just Better Care help?
Just Better Care can work with a multi disciplinary team building on individuals
strengths and assisting them to rehabilitate through supports that may include;
assistance with showering and grooming, assistance with managing the home and
everyday tasks such as light cleaning, preparing meals, taking them to appointments.
We are able to tailor a service specifically to the individuals needs for as little or as
long as is required.
We recognise that sometimes the demands of caring for someone can be
exhausting. Just Better Care are able to support with a break for a carer through their respite care services. A few hours or even overnight support whilst the carer has a
break knowing that their loved one is being supported. Assistance with preparing
meals, showering or personal care, help with the housework or just social support
can make all the difference.
